Last Night of the Proms - 13th March 2010
Saturday 13th March saw a wonderful evening at the Salvation Army in Maidstone, with the musical extravaganza The Last Night of the Proms. It was the first year that the evening was led by Bandmaster Kevin Ashman, who must be congratulated on his success. Previous years have been led by Keith Thomas, who retired last year after 40 years as Bandmaster.
The evening of musical praise was sandwiched between Trumpet Voluntary, and the National Anthem and included a wide selection of contributions from special guests.
We welcomed the Dedicated Divas, who started by singing favourite Salvation Army songs, reminding us that we were meeting together to have fun in the name of Jesus Christ. They finished their contributions with the much loved Rhythm of Life, which, I think, exhausted each and every one of us by watching them alone.
Our very own musical wonder, Lisa Davis, sung a variety of pieces including Silent Noon, and Le Secret. We are very lucky to have such great talent among us at the corps.
The Evening took us on a journey around the world, including France and America, ending back in Great Britain with some much loved favourites.
Musical masterpieces were enjoyed by performers and the audience alike, with traditional pieces including Fantasia on British Sea Songs, and the obligatory Pomp and Circumstance by Edward Elgar, entwined with modern favourites such as Round-Up which received a gleeful cheer from the audience.
A word of thanks must be expressed to everyone who took part on the night, of course to the Dedicated Divas, to Lisa, and to the band. A special mention must go to the organisers of the night for all their hard work.
